Multiverse. Once only discussed by theoretical physicists, it is now a word used by both DC and Marvel fans. It is the word developed by the clever writers at Marvel to explain why there have been so many reboots of the same superhero series, each with its own set of actors and plots. Simple, say the writers; it is because each story takes place in its own Universe. This concept is the impetus for Spiderman: No Way Home, which to me, stands alongside Black Panther as one of the best of the Marvel films.
There is a magic and thrill to this movie, largely because it brings back the old villains, and all three Spideys together for an action-packed, playful amusement park ride.
Impressive is the return of Toby McGuire as the wise and sensitive Spider Man who provides philosophical meaning to what it means to be a friendly neighborhood superhero. Impressive too is Zendaya as the tough and practical MJ, whose cynical comments tone down the gathering of boys.
The mythology of rishi-like magical powers is provided with the usual precision by Mr. Cumberbatch, with CGI as impressive as his ballet-like hand gestures.
The magic of this movie will capture you, bringing perhaps a reminder of your own youth.
