Giganotasaurus. I believe this is how it is spelled. Ask my 6-year old nephew, and he will tell you in detail how it is the largest known carnivore ever to walk the earth. He has told me this every time I have visited, and I have found it cute. Cute is not what I would say about a middle-aged scientist who says exactly the same thing at least three times in 30 minutes,
But, seeing the good looking cast of the Jurassic series gather together to protect a little girl with a charming British accent is not something my nephew can easily offer; hence I watched the movie but gained little else. In this critic's humble opinion, the latest (and supposedly last) of the Jurassic series has bombed for both an amateur script and terrible acting. In other movies directed towards kids, the adults are brought into the film by the cynical observations and pithy wit of the characters. It's a fair deal, the kids thrive on the image of giant CGI creatures; we find comfort in references to things we can understand.
But, Jurassic Park often makes the one kid more mature than the adults, leaving us to watch at the shrieks and shouts of scientists who are supposed to have worked with the dinosaurs all their lives. The shrieks would have been funny if one among them shared some improvisational words. Instead we are treated to all of us saying "ew" to the crunch, crunch sounds of women walking over giant locusts.
If this reminds you of Indiana Jones, you would be right. There are a boatload of Spielbergian moments in this film, from chase scenes in exotic locales to hats being retrieved at the last second. All seems to want to remind us of the good clean fun we had as kids.
But, good clean fun also relies on an engaging story. And as far as that is concerned, it would seem the dinosaur movies are marching towards extinction.
