A creepy castle miles away from civilization; an eccentric billionaire and a host of equally looney guests; and most importantly, the dinner table where important announcements are made. Such are the necessary ingredients...for murder.
Neeyat is an undeniably Western Whodunit that is largely inspired by the famous novels of Dame Agatha Christie, especially Ten Little Indians.
There is little Indian in the movie, however, other than the language. So item songs, nonsequitor humor, and hyperbole give respectful room for a proper police investigation.
But, the person investigating is not a police officer, but a CBI agent, come to extradite the soon to be victim for the crimes he committed in India. Nor is our investigator very proper, with her frumpy clothes, oversized parka, hypoglycemia and anxiety attacks. The otherwise classy Ms. Balan, however, pulls off this character with the same finesse of all her others. In some ways she represents the comfortable middle class, who can only gawk with wonder at the insanity of the filthy rich. She is indeed an outcast from this mad-hatter world, and like many of us, she prefers it remain that way.
But like a professional, the CBI Officer leads us through the maze of suspects and motives as, in true Christie style, some of those suspected face their own brutal end.
Familiar territory for all who love a good mystery. But, a clever ending is in store, one that all but those with good observation skills will never guess.
Advice to those who like to race out of theaters, stay through the closing credits.
