Mohan's Measure

Guntur Kaaram is one of those movies that has all the elements of a blockbuster, a great cast, an interesting anti-hero.  But, like a dud firecracker, it just fizzles out, the title becoming meaningless.

The legendary Mahesh Babu plays Ramana, a street-smart ruffian who is the talk of the town in Guntur, but who now must suddenly return to the mother who estranged from him years before. The question is - what do "mommy issues" have to do with a tough talking hero?  The writer/director doesn't seem to know so he fills in with a sundry of villains and fight scenes to keep our hero heroic.  And of course, he does need a girl to defend, but oddly this is not his leading lady.

Newcomer Srileela plays Amuktamalyada, and is talented enough and pretty enough to keep up with  Mahesh himself, particularly in the dance sequences.  However, as soon as she is brought into the story, she is quickly taken out.  This is true of several other actors as well, many of whom are legends in their own right, like Jagapathy Babu, Ajay Ghosh, Rao Ramesh, Sunil, and Jayaraman.  It seems the director really is only using them as props to lengthen what was a 30 minute storyline into nearly 3 hours of wasted film.

For really, the movie is some syrupy sap about Dear Ol' Mom, and how she sacrifices for her son so that he could be kept safe from the real villain, who turns out to be a 70 year old man struggling with COPD.  As Mahesh himself says, his only love failure is that with his mom. Does Mr. Srinivas really understand what he is suggesting here, or does he have mommy issues of his own?

We need psychiatric help after seeing this movie.
