Like Adipurush, Hanu-Man brings the Ramayana into the cinematic universe, starting what will certainly be a series with the story of the origins of a Superhero. But, unlike the former, Hanu-Man does so with sensitivity and humanity.
We find ourselves reminded of Wakanda in visiting Anjanadri, the where a giant statue of the Monkey God stands adjacent to a waterfall, guarding over the people of what is surely a pleasant hamlet.
Every hamlet has its shares of evildoers, but it has its share of small time thieves and even its own rogues gallery.
Mr. Sajja plays the former as a harmless pickpocket, who is still loved by his village and very much infatuated with the local doctor and childhood love, Meenakshi. Ms. Aiyer plays the village belle with a certain determination and spunk, her conservative clothing throughout further telling us she just isn't eye candy.
In its own bittersweet way, the thief becomes a hero, finding a crystal which contains one drop of God Hanuma's blood. His unwittingly obtained powers take him onto destiny.
What I really liked about this movie is it is presented in a self effacing, comical way. References to Superheroes and Indian blockbuster heroes are referenced, along with mentions of other Superhero movies, including the one that has vibranium. I also liked that this is done with due deference to religion and faith.
Indeed, Telugu cinema is developing a new cinematic Universe with Hanu-Man. I, for one, am ready to soar.
Jai Sri Ram!!!
