The majority of Bollywood movies of the 1980s were far better than the stuff of today. But, most still left much to be desired. Big name stars portrayed  over the top roles in regurgitated plots to appease a mass audience.  But, then there was the legendary Hrishikesh Mukherjee. This great director brought believable, real world stories with a regular cast of good actors. And what churned out was true entertainment.

Kissi Se Na Kehna is a fine example of Director Mukherjee's family comedy. The brilliant Utpal Dutt plays Kailashnath Trivedi, a curmudgeonly father who wants his son to marry the perfection of traditional Indian bride. So traditional, in fact, that the bride he seeks should not speak a word of English. Mr. Dutt's facial expressions at meeting modern city women is classic!

His son Ramesh, played by Mr. Shaikh, however, has met his own classy lady, a doctor named Romala. If she wants the marriage to happen, she and her uncle have to act like uneducated villagers, making for laugh out loud scenarios.

Saeeda Jaffrey gives a wonderful performance as an easy going friend and well wisher to the family, who assists in a comedy of little white lies and all out deceptions, all for the sake of bringing good to the life of his lonely friend.

Good acting, a heartwarming yet humorous story, and wonderful ambiance of a much simpler India makes Kissi Se Na Kehna is by far one of the best comedies ever made.
