Mohan's Measure ⭐
It is impressive that images of Rama Parivaram are always seen in the background, if only to remind us of the title and the moral message this movie wants to convey. Ramam and Raghavam are the same says Samuthirakani in a climactic scene. This is wonderful sentiment offered in a movie that is anything but about sentimentality.
The story is about a trouble-making young man driven by bad habits who winds up owing lots of money to several bad people, and makes a macabre decision to solve his problem. The theme is set around the often strained relationship between a father and son. But no one could expect the level to which this strain has gone. There is undoubtedly a psychosis in the son, but what would explain it, growing up in the level of stability that his parents have provided?
This movie is Mr. Koranani's directorial debut and first time in a starring role, and that too a serious one. His clothes and mannerisms make it obvious that he is trying to come across as a Telugu version of Dhanush, but even Dhanush could have done better with a plot than this. The vacillating behavior of the lead character only proves that the story is based on a paper thin storyline, and many plot devices were needed and made to keep the film rolling. The 10-minute cardboard cutout leading lady doesn't add much either, because there is little if any romance in her rejection, or even in a willingness to come back if he straightens up.
Samuthirakani tries to keep the film alive with his usual stoic acting style, but just how many times can we see him being the good guy who - those who have seen this are asked to pardon the pun - winds up getting thrown under the bus?
In short, despite good acting by all but the lead role, the movie is just as the lead character proves himself to be, a pathetic loser.
