Madras Matinee - fanfare to the common man
Satyaraj plays a successful sci-fi writer who is given an ultimatum by his young neighbor, write a story about the everyday, the common man. This sets the stage for his serving as narrator to this vignette, which offers observations on life among the lower middle class in Chennai, what to speak of the rest of the world.
The acting by the rest of the cast is slow and steady, the director taking great care to create an every day ambience to the events in life. The weakness lies when hyperbole creeps in.
As is the case in a telling point of the film, where the untimely demise of the family pet leads to a fist fight, and the involvement of a local politician. While the scene serves as a light hearted break, it seems a bad fit to an otherwise sober film.
Overall, the acting and general tone makes for an engaging story, and the inclusion of Satyaraj as narrator is creative. But, there is no real message to be offered, nor is there much of a conclusion. What is stated at the end, however, serves to explain the movie overall - being middle class is quite the adventure.
