Ramalinga Swamigal, aka Vallálar, remains one of the underrated among the 19th Century social reformers. Unmistakably South Indian in his outlook, Swamigal brought the age old spiritual traditions, falsely identified as a single religion, into the modern age; promoting the Tamil Sentiment that behind the veils of ignorance caused by the industrial age lies the Truth of every living being, a innate attitude of affection and compassion. Using the light of a lamp to symbolize the Sacred, Vallálar disavowed notions of caste and creed in favor of harmony among all people in shared humanistic ideals.
For the lead characters, Muthusirpi and Suseela, Swamigal's teachings are the very foundation for every aspect of their life, including the deep love for each other. As such, it becomes evident they are easy prey to an amoral world.
Desperately needing money for health reasons, the couple agrees to a horrendous loan agreement with a shark, spiraling them into the grim realities of the "idolators."
This contrast between the peace-loving followers of Vallálar and the rest of the known world is so stark it makes the audience question their own character. The setting is Thoothukudi, not Vada Chennai; you would think the hospitality South Tamil Nadu is known for would be seen somewhere?! But, alas such decency is limited only to the couple, who eventually reveal to us just how kind the teachings of their guru are.
But if the philosophy of the noble Ramalinga Swamigal hold true, would it not be the innate nature of others to live by kindness?
