Mohan's Measure ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It is hard to say when the Kaaval Deivam of the Chera civilization became adopted by Kerala Brahmans as Sasta and later mythologized into the son of Shiva and Vishnu, for whom men take to penance. 

Just as enigmatic is his worldwide appeal. And, it is perhaps this, which makes Ayyappa worship a key element  in this powerful film. 

Ravi Teja is presented with a most challenging role. He is Trinath, a well meaning banana farmer with an insatiable appetite for liquor. He is also an ardent devotee of Ayyappa, which gives his poor wife comfort during his 41 day vratam. If there is anyone who can mellow him, it is his precious Manamma, a precocious little girl with a picture perfect face who serves, interestingly, as the lead female character.  

Siruvi Nakshatra's performance is on par with actors five times her age, and her ability to connect with Ravi Teja on a father-daughter bond made me think the actress is actually his daughter. She is blessed with talent, but her character is both a blessing and a curse to the people of the village, as she is her father's source for all the goings on. He is particularly concerned about the treatment of girls, and one doesn't want be in the area when his drunken stupor and violent temper take over. 

While all this sounds like another mass action movie - and I can't deny that - the mix of faith, family and how both are at risk in a dangerous make this film engaging. 

What captivates, as a captivating and frightening school teacher, Ms. Shankar as a supportive but perturbed wife, and just as important, Sai Kumar as the spiritual head and practical advisor to the village. 

But, like in any good thrillers, there is a darkness at work here, hidden among the many secrets the people of the village seem to take for granted. It is seen in expressions of innocent teenager Gayatri, played by Ms. Sameera, who wants to share, and knows only one person in the village who will act on it. But he is too drunk to listen. 

A dark play set and perhaps motivated by the Will of God.
